Full Time Job
The Sports Analytics Writer will be the lead content generator for the Sports Analytics Team. The Sports Analytics Writer will utilize the data from the Stats & Information Group's (SIG) advanced metrics and tools to create unique and differentiating content. This includes writing articles for ESPN.com/analytics and Insider, documents for internal use, and crafting scripts for TV. The Sports Analytics Writer will have a forward-facing role while also providing content internally to support all ESPN platforms. This position will utilize and leverage ESPN's proprietary data and metrics and work closely with the Sports Analytics Team to identify the key components in these complex formulas and turn them into language that allows them to be integrated into storytelling.
The Sports Analytics Writer will work in a team environment and will have the skills to partner with the entire Sports Analytics Team as well as SIG staffers, writers, editors and other content producers outside the Sports Analytics Team. The Sports Analytics writer will identify trends and react to news stories on a daily basis, using the new tools the Sports Analytics Team develops, products available to the Stats & Information Group and other tools available in the marketplace. The Sports Analytics Writer will focus on telling the story in the most accurate way, using advanced analysis, with an important focus on matching that storytelling to the medium. A deep understanding of Stats & Information's data capabilities is required, including a close collaboration with the Stats & Analysis Team. The Sports Analytics Writer will be expected to manipulate large data sets using languages and programs such as Python, SQL, R, and Excel.
The ideal candidate will have experience writing data-driven sports stories and a track record of analyzing sports data and statistics, as well as the ability to promote the use of analytics in ESPN content both internally and externally. The Sports Analytics Writer will be called upon to educate other members of the Stats & Information Group on analytics as well as other members of Production, both in TV and on the digital platforms.
Responsibilities
• Be the lead content generator for the Sports Analytics Team.
• Write data-driven stories and articles to be published on ESPN platforms.
• Utilize data management and analysis skills to identify unique storylines and content ideas.
• Provide internal notes, documents, and scripts that utilize statistical analysis to support production.
• Work closely with the digital sport editors to produce articles.
• Seek and respond to feedback around personal performance.
• Actively participate in team and department meetings.
• Demonstrate a strong knowledge of statistics' role in ESPN products and regularly propose new ways statistics can be utilized in ESPN storytelling or as premium products for studio and digital media platforms and elsewhere.
• The ability to manipulate data using our data-mining tools and compute basic formulas using Excel.
Basic Qualifications
• 3 years' experience working with statistics, preferably sports analytics.
• A demonstrated ability to turn analytics into storylines.
• Experience in writing data-driven stories and working with an editor to get the work published.
• Experience working with tools such as SQL, R, and Excel.
• Elite-level knowledge of sports statistics, current events and rules for the sports that ESPN covers.
• Top-notch professionalism in conduct, comportment and approach to the workplace environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong news/content judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to use predictive modeling, statistics, trend analysis, and other data analysis techniques.
• Meticulous attention to detail in striving for 100 percent accuracy.
• Full availability for this position, which will include nights, weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of ESPN's digital media coverage of all sports and games.
• A knowledge of television production usage of data in on-air and research applications.
• Working knowledge of all ESPN platforms' products and technologies.
• Understanding of AP and ESPN Production style.
• Ability to utilize SQL and/or R to access and analyze data.
• Ability to speak and write Spanish.

• Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Education
• Master's Degree in quantitative discipline.
