The Software Engineer I – VFX position is entry level position focused on aiding in the development of prototypes, concepts and new products within the Creative Development Group. General knowledge across all VFX subjects including real-time rendering, script writing/code and creative development is preferred. This candidate must have a basic knowledge of system requirements, production implementation and impact on workflows. The focus of this role under the direction of the VFX leadership, is creating prototypes for internal tools, systems and fan-facing products using innovative technology. The ideal candidate will also help foster customer relationships, advance revenue opportunities and increase the team's opportunities to support growing demands.
Responsibilities
The Creative Development team will be focused on continuous brainstorming and prototyping of creative ideas that will push ESPN forward with new solutions, approaches and platforms. This role will report directly to the Concept Development Manager located in Bristol, CT.
• Work closely with group leaders to conceptualize, assess and help develop innovative revenue-generating and/or cost-saving immersive technology ideas
• Must be able to work under the guidance of VFX leadership to achieve desired level of aesthetic quality and technical accuracy
• Ability to execute a broad range of VFX tasks including modeling, texturing, look development, compositing and lighting
• Active participation in helping to generate revenue by developing the ''next wave'' of fan experiences. This will include: next gen virtual ads and billboards, virtual and augmented reality graphics, live action and real-time technologies, virtual studio applications, next gen VFX branded technology and new technology for studio and events.
• Some projects include analysis, design development, documentation writing, coding, scripting and testing
• Must keep up to date with new trends with gaming, consumer, broadcast and IT technology
• Find and evaluate new technologies used by the Creative Development team
• Ability to take direction and work well within a collaborative team
• Work and deliver under pressure with tight deadlines
• Must be able to problem solve and predict potential problems with assigned tasks
• Provide timely communication and status with regards to project deliverables
• Timely communication with customers on systems design content, implementation schedules, project status reporting, and troubleshooting
• Continuous learning and development of skill-sets such as content creation software, rendering systems and hardware development
• Decisions regarding product requirements and timelines
• Interacts closely with other teams in the Advanced Technology Group facilitating a creative team environment
• Some travel required
Basic Qualifications
• Up to 1 years related experience
• Studies/skills in 3D VFX graphic systems
• Experience with VBScript, Access, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects
• General understanding of Windows-based systems and TCP/IP networking is desirable
• Knowledge of broadcast graphic software/hardware and/or graphic design/animation is a plus
• Ability to work collaboratively with Technology, Engineering, Production and Creative Services
• Must demonstrate solid organizational, communication, and troubleshooting skills
• Strong presentation, organization and writing skills
• Ability to travel globally on short notice and work weekends, nights and holidays as required
• Must possess a passion for sports!
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in VFX post techniques, Experience with advertising integrations, Knowledge of real-time platforms including VR/AR/MR development
• Basic knowledge of the Mental Ray and Arnold renderers
• Knowledge of game engine/real-time renderers, development and workflow
• Knowledge of applicable software includes: 3D software (Maya, Softimage, Cinema 4d), Nuke, 3d match-moving software is a plus
Required Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline or its equivalent.
