Full Time Job
Senior Production Researcher will use broad and deep sports knowledge to ensure the accuracy of live news-and-information shows such as SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and sport-specific shows on soccer, baseball, football, basketball and other sports and various game broadcasts. Responsibilities will include researching original content for full-screen graphics, anchor lead-ins and original pieces, as well as creating and dispersing information to other areas of ESPN, such as Studio Production, Event Production, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, ESPN Mobile, and ESPN International.
The Senior Researcher will be a leader in the department and across Stats & Information in terms of content, mentoring, recognizing long-term issues, and generating ideas related to the future of the department. This person will consider the broader ESPN-wide perspective and will demonstrate leadership competencies in leading themselves, colleagues and on occasion the research newsroom.
Responsibilities
• Responsibilities will include researching original content for full-screen graphics, anchor lead-ins and original pieces, as well as creating and dispersing information to other areas of ESPN, such as Studio Production, Event Production, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, ESPN Mobile, and ESPN International.
• A leader in the department and across Stats & Information in terms of content, mentoring, recognizing long-term issues, and generating ideas related to the future of the department.
• Will think globally about content, from planning and projects to shows across all ESPN platforms.
• Utilizes broad and deep sports knowledge to ensure that graphics, game notes, anchor scripts and reporter scripts are factually and statistically accurate.
• Develops original graphics that provide statistical or factual analysis of events, news stories and topical issues.
• Researches original content for virtually every element of a studio show.
• Provides real-time updates and trend notes for anchors in studio and for score panels.
• Researches statistics and other information for all members of show group to support storylines.
• Develops and communicates storylines for a variety of ESPN shows.
• Supports Event Production game crews with notes and news articles.
• Demonstrates the necessary speed, accuracy and creativity to do all the normal research tasks and takes on additional duties to enhance shows, sports and content across platforms.
• Establishes expertise in the Research room on show and sport assignments.
• Generally the lead researcher on certain sports. If not the lead, then an integral member of that sport team.
• Creates and builds strong relationships with show and sport units; becomes an integral member of those teams.
• Expected to be competent at all on-site roles and remote locations when necessary, representing the department professionally at all times.
• Lead and oversee a specific content area, sport or show.
• Plan, facilitate and lead meetings and/or educational seminars within the department and across SIG
• Incorporates Next Level and advanced metrics into all aspects of work, as part of a wide array of research tools to utilize.
• Takes a proactive approach to working with managers to address issues and offer suggestions on solving problems.
• Approaches job from a larger ESPN-wide perspective.
Basic Qualifications
• Must have demonstrated the ability to do all the work required of a lead project or show researcher at an elite level.
• Must have mastered all the elements and skills required of a Production Researcher
• Elite writing and grammar skills. Must have demonstrated ability to research and to write air-ready scripts and edit and improve anchors' scripts.
• Very deep and very broad sports knowledge across multiple sports. Must have expert-level recall of current and historical sports statistics, news, events and milestones.
• Must be able to identify appropriate statistical tools, advanced statistics or Next Level data to support storylines across all platforms.
• Must be able to communicate information accurately.
• Must be able to adhere to strict deadlines and react to breaking news.
Preferred Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years experience working with working with statistics in an inline, television or print media environment
Required Education
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
