Full Time Job
The Sr. Director, Ad Platform Engineering is responsible for leading a team of engineers that owns the development and implementation of Ad technology for ESPN's digital properties. This includes the research, design, build and management for new, and 3rd party, technology platforms in direct support of advertising insertion, data collection/processing, segmentation, targeting and flighting across our addressable distribution platforms. This team will interact directly with the consumer engineering and data platform engineering teams to deliver our clients a great ad experience.
The ideal candidate will have a diverse background and a proven track record of taking ad platform technology from concept through delivery. The right candidate must be a self-motivated, team player who can influence the overall business objectives of ESPN. This person must be able to work closely with other internal and external product and technology experts and must have strong communication and analytical skills with an inspiring drive for excellence.
Responsibilities
• Lead the development of ESPN's portfolio of Ad platform technology products
• Ensuring that new technologies are incorporated into applications, systems, programs and database protocols.
• Ability to evaluate new advertising and marketing technologies, market trends and industry best practices.
• Provide recommendations to the ad product strategy
• Managing and setting the standardization of ad tech strategy and guidelines (Ad Tech Portfolio, Benchmarks, etc).
• Inform product ownership via technology analysis and support for an org wide pilot-to-launch methodology
• Work alongside Ad Platform Product management to identify, build or buy, innovative ad products and opportunities that drive measurable performance for advertisers
• Ensuring the quality assurance and build and release management for all internal Ad platform software systems.
• Educate and train internal teams on engineering best practices, specifications and key benefits of the product
• In partnership with Product Management create detailed blueprint of product releases and features using strategic briefs detailing the scope and value proposition
• Own technology specification and release documentation
Basic Qualifications
• 10 years of applicable experience in the software product industry
• 6 years of management experience leading professionals.
• Experience creating a technical product/platform development strategy based on an understanding of market drivers, trends, competitive positions and opportunities
• Expertise in creating and deploying best practices and methodologies in a matrix workplace.
• Sound technical knowledge of related systems and an understanding of project management fundamentals, web operations, the online advertising space and the complexity of technology as it relates to online ads and ad campaign management.
• Prior experience with ad technology is a MUST (3rd party Ad Servers, Programmatic)
• Proficient in managing ad vendor implementation and testing across desktop, tablet, mobile, video and audio
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to definition and implementation of processes and streamlining workflows
• Has a positive attitude and thrives in fast-paced, interactive advertising sales environments where constant change is the norm and the bar for performance is set high
• Service-oriented, able to build relationships, work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Proven ability to influence sales, technical, editorial and UI staff; as well as be a team player
• Strong work ethic and analytical skills regarding business and technical issues
• Ability to multi-task - must be able to juggle multiple projects and internal stakeholders
• Must be able to think critically about both client needs and internal solutions
• Experience with Hadoop and Hive
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree or its equivalent
