Full Time Job
The Senior Editor for ESPN in China, is an experienced digital media editor who helps manage content budgets and oversees both written and video content for ESPN's digital presence in China in conjunction with a third-party company, Tencent.
The Senior Editor will closely work with Tencent to bring ESPN's content, including text and video, into the China region and published to Tencent's QQ Sports portal. The position will edit original content in Mandarin and review quality control for the translation of published English-language content into Mandarin.

Content creation will also be a major part of the role. The Senior Editor will be expected to write feature stories, news articles and columns – in both Mandarin and English – which will run in both China and on ESPN.com's global editions.
On-camera reporting will also be required as the Senior Editor will be expected to provide On-Court Reports from NBA basketball games throughout the season, including pre-game, halftime and postgame reports and interviews with NBA players.
The role also ensures all content meets established ESPN journalistic standards and brand guidelines.
This position is a hands-on position, working with content (text, video, audio and social media) and candidates will be expected to display outstanding news judgment, skilled storytelling ability, thorough knowledge of digital practices (including SEO, social platforms and content sharing), and a strong knowledge of journalistic principals and methods. The Senior Editor will work closely with ESPN's studio production team in Bristol, CT, to produce original video content, primarily centered on NBA basketball and global soccer.
The Senior Editor will work with Tencent's editorial teams to plan and coordinate content, and will also then work to coordinate the delivery of the content to Tencent and oversee the publication into QQ Sports.
Candidates for the role should be skilled in producing content that resonates on multiple digital platforms, including the Web, app and mobile phone.
This position requires regular, daily communication with teams across multiple continents and time zones. Strong organizational and managerial skills, and overall editorial vision, are all a must.
Responsibilities
The position will edit and manage content, ensuring it meets established tone, theme, style and consistency requirements. Additionally, the role will enhance existing material and contribute to building an audience, work to coordinate comprehensive coverage and breaking news with immediacy and accuracy.
• The year-round publication and development of written, photo, audio and video content (both translated and originally produced) for ESPN in China.
• Working with both Tencent's editorial team and ESPN's editors to plan the right daily mix of content that will resonate with users in the China market.
• Coordinating coverage of breaking news to ensure timeliness and accuracy, understanding reporting protocol and news judgment.
• Producing written and video that will be published on Tencent.
• Delivering on-camera reports live from NBA games and other events.
• Meeting and exceeding traffic goals for ESPN's content published to QQ Sports.
• Lending insights and partnering with ESPN's other editions around the globe.
Basic Qualifications
• At least 5 years of experience in print or digital journalism, at least half of which has been as an editor.
• Fluency in both Mandarin and English.
• Ability to manage relationships and work with multiple teams.
• Extensive knowledge of sports such as basketball, soccer, boxing, golf, tennis, auto racing and all major American professional sports.
• Ability to edit in Mandarin and English and communicate with teams in multiple languages.
• Fluency in web authoring tools, SEO and software: CMS, Photoshop, basic HTML, FTP clients, basic video editing, photo editing, Mac and PC operating systems.
• Fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
• Digital journalism experience and strong news judgment; understands assigned sports from a journalistic point of view, and for the China audience.
• Excellent organizational skills, plus news reporting, writing and editing skills.
• Experience managing budgets and working to monetize content through work with business partners, including advertising and marketing.
• Unparalleled knowledge of the China market.
Preferred Qualifications
• Typically seven-plus years of editorial experience.
• Experience working in a digital news operation and editorial team.
• Experience in a digital business and work with advertising sales and marketing.
• Preferred experience managing writers, editors and an overall editorial department.
Preferred Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or a related field, or its equivalent.
