FiveThirtyEight.com, a digital initiative of ESPN, focuses on providing data-driven journalism in sports, news, politics, and other areas. FiveThirtyEight.com was acquired by ESPN in 2013 from Nate Silver, who is the Editor-in-Chief of the site.
FiveThirtyEight.com is currently seeking a General Editor (Copy desk) to ensure the accuracy and consistency of style, text, syntax and grammar of feature articles, blog posts and graphics text. The ideal candidate will have experience as a copy editor with a developed sense of prose style and grammar, technical editing experience and outstanding communication skills.
Responsibilities
• The General Editor (Copy) will typically edit one or two feature-length articles and several shorter blog posts per day. The job may also occasionally entail working with FiveThirtyEight's interactive news team, editing the text of longer-term projects. The copy editor will routinely copy edit charts and graphics.
• The job is based in New York City, and will require a significant office presence. Hours will be variable depending on the demands of the news cycle, and will sometimes require night and weekend work.
Basic Qualifications
• The individual in this position must be fluent in the FiveThirtyEight voice. Candidates must be able to demonstrate they are gifted in editorial speed and news judgment.
• The candidate must be extensively familiar HTML as well as AP style.
• Knowledge of a broad array of topic areas pursuant to FiveThirtyEight's major verticals, such as news, politics, sports, science, culture and economics.
• The candidate must be comfortable working with and checking the accuracy of numbers.
• The job requires a self-starter who is capable of managing a heavy workload and who has excellent time management skills. Reliability, creativity, and work ethic are a must.
• Minimum of 3 years of editing experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• A background in mathematics/statistics and technical editing.
• Five or more years of copy editing experience at a fast-paced digital or print news outlet.
• Experience in curating and producing content for digital platforms.
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree
