Full Time Paid Internship
We Are…
FiveThirtyEight, founded by Nate Silver, is a data-supported news website owned by ESPN. FiveThirtyEight covers politics, sports, lifestyles, science, economics and general news.
Responsibilities
Your Role:
The internship will be a mix of writing, researching and contributing to short blog posts and longer features. You'll be learning the precepts of sports journalism in general and data-facing sports coverage in particular.
Often, this will mean working with writers and editors to find a particular stat for a story, but this is not a research-only internship. You'll be expected to pitch clever, original sports stories and then deliver them. Ideally, these ideas will be informed not only by data, but also by enthusiasm for and curiosity about sports as they're played and consumed.
Basic Qualifications
What You Bring to the Team:
• Basic knowledge of major sports supplemented with expertise in topics outside the traditional areas of coverage
• Journalism experience as a writer and/or reporter
• An interest in sports statistics with a basic familiarity of advanced metrics
• Ability to work on tight deadlines and respond to a fast-moving news cycle
Required Education
• Enrolled as a junior, senior or graduate student at an accredited college or university in the semester prior to the internship
