FiveThirtyEight.com, a digital initiative of ESPN, focuses on providing data-driven journalism in sports, news, politics, and other areas. FiveThirtyEight.com was acquired by ESPN in 2013 from Nate Silver, who is the Editor-in-Chief of the site.
FiveThirtyEight is looking for an Editorial Coordinator who will support the Editorial processes of the site and be the initial point of contact with those interested in doing business with the site. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of FiveThirtyEight's editorial mission and an appreciation of FiveThirtyEight's data driven journalism, along with top notch administrative skills.
Responsibilities
• Serve as the ''Editorial Gatekeeper'' – the primary initial contact for those who are interested in doing business with FiveThirtyEight
• Takes story pitches from interested parties, evaluate their viability based on knowledge of what makes a good story for FiveThirtyEight, and routing those requests to the proper Editor.
• Point person for running any events, symposiums, screenings that FiveThirtyEight hosts, and coordinate FiveThirtyEight's participation in others' events.
• Coordinates submission for awards in all categories that FiveThirtyEight would qualify for.
• Maintain the Editorial Calendar for the Copy Chief and coordinates back-up copy editors based on needs of the site.
• Create a process to track legal contract workflow for the site's contract Writers, identifying contracts coming up for renewal and dealing with Writers and their Agents to ensure revisions and amendments are tracked and follow up.
• Process all invoices and work with Finance on budget issues.
• Assists the HR department with onboarding functions for all incoming staff – UAA equipment requests, computer access, gathering documents for I-9's, etc.
• Point person with HR for all Contingent Workforce Requests.
• Point person with FiveThirtyEight writers to ensure compliance with all HR functions – hours input, vacation time input, contract tracking, etc.
• Keep the staff master vacation calendar, preventing vacation overlap.
• Liaison with Bristol based functions including IT and Facilities, booking conference rooms, setting up A/V conferences.
• Supports the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor in all administrative functions – travel and expense reporting, preparing presentations, manage relationships with key people internally and externally, ordering office supplies, coordinating office space.
Basic Qualifications
• Two years of experience in a fast-paced office environment
• Demonstrated skills in: time management, organizational skills, conflict management, business acumen, priority setting, decision making, verbal and written communication
• Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications
• Experience with invoice processing and departmental budgeting
• Understanding of FiveThirtyEight's editorial mission and its content – knowledge of what makes a good story for the site.
Preferred Qualifications
• 3-4 years of experience in fast-paced office environment
• Knowledge of SAP functions – travel and expense reporting and invoicing
Required Education
• High School diploma
