Job Title: Assignment Desk Manager
Job Id: 256279
Job Responsibilities• Utilize extensive sports knowledge to make quick, accurate decisions regarding direct-to-air content, as well as contributing editorially in other areas, including story ideas.• Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the International Assignment Desk.• Manage the coordination of freelance and staff reporters, as well as production and technical personnel, associated with daily newsgathering efforts.• Direct and encourage assignment editors in finding and sourcing newsworthy stories. Work closely with regional News Editors in deciding editorial focus. Support the International news desks.• Assist various show areas by supporting all company and departmental content goals; provide visual sports and news program material for all aspects of the International SportsCenters, including but not limited to ESPN PacRim, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Latin, ESPN UK, and ESPN Brasil.• Collaborates with ABC NewsOne/ABC affiliates/ESPN Domestic, as well as other network affiliates on breaking news stories, sharing of information.• Supervise the gathering of story-related material, sound and video; oversee and at times execute the booking of ENG & SNG crews, trucks, and feeds.• Recommends and suggests appropriate production and editorial emphasis, and techniques to field reporters in order to enhance coverage and story impact.• Responsible for keeping constant communication between International and Domestic efforts relating to sports news or news coverage.• Serve as a liaison with the International Studio and Events areas regarding short and long-terms news coverage plans; work on long-term projects as needed. Some travel may be required.• Oversees all details of specific projects as assigned by department supervisor and International SportsCenter Coordinating Producers.• Responsible for direct communication between Bristol, and both US based and International bureau Reporters.• Provide training and support for incoming Assignment Editors; hire staff as necessary. Manage, develop, and provide feedback to direct reports.• Work cohesively between the Assignment Desk and the International Production Support area, which distributes all relevant ESPN content to our International bureaus and affiliates.• Manage a news budget associated with expenses in each of our domestic, US bureaus. Process, approve, and catalogue invoices.• Maintain the work schedule of assignment desk personnel.• Coordinate with other department heads to discuss strategies to enhance the ESPN brand.• Display understanding and enthusiasm for company policies, procedures, and direction, especially the Mission and Values Statement and Company Priorities. Integrate the company’s core values into decisions and make certain Research group members do as well. Qualifications:• A minimum of 3 years related production experience, specifically in sports news.• At least one year of management experience, including having had direct reports.• Strong knowledge of Domestic & International sports, including, but not limited to Soccer, Rugby, and Cricket.• Strong Interpersonal skills• Computer literate; previous experience with ENPS, NCS, and SAP systems preferable.• Technical knowledge of TV production and electronic newsgathering.• Fluent Spanish language skills required.• College degree in related broadcast field required.
