We are seeking candidates for the position of Director- Business & Legal Affairs to be located in our Silver Spring, Maryland headquarters.
Position Summary:
The Director, Business & Legal Affairs will be responsible for independently handling business and legal negotiations, drafting television, production and other related contracts and advising on content-related legal issues for a wide variety of production and programming transactions for some of Discovery's networks with a focus on documentary and non-scripted reality programming.
Responsibilities:
1. Assume responsibility for project/deal negotiations and preparation of documentation for producing, financing, and/or acquiring television product for Discovery networks.
2. Negotiate all business and legal terms with producer's lawyers and agents or other representatives, including standard terms and conditions, back-end participation and ancillary deal components such as the licensing and granting of rights.
3. Independently draft and/or review development, commission, co-production, acquisition, and other related agreements.
4. Coordinate and solve problems for all business and legal issues related to the assigned deals, including communicating with network executives and colleagues regarding deal status and content risks.
5. Identify and handle any business or legal issues, coordinate with standards and practices, ad sales, and marketing/PR, manage production legal issues and problems, evaluate commercial and licensing terms.
6. Review and draft ancillary production related documents such as access agreements, participant releases, and consultant agreements.
7. Assume accountability for deals under tight timelines while acquiring appropriate rights package within budgetary parameters.
8. Manage business practices in concert with network editorial/creative and production management.
9. Provide on-going business and legal guidance to internal clients concerning pre-publication production, broadcast clearance and other issues (e.g., copyright and publicity rights issues) as needed.
Requirements:
* Minimum of 5-6 years of business and legal affairs experience in the entertainment industry, or commensurate experience in the entertainment division of a law firm.
* Strong academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school preferred.
* Knowledge of television program agreements, and entertainment and cable industries.
* Knowledge of defamation, privacy, and copyright laws preferred.
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high-volume workload.
* Industrious and self-motivated team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative, make firm decisions, manage projects and offer a high level of customer service.
* Excellent business judgment.
* Excellent people skills and ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external partners.
* Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and other software applications required.
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
