Accounting role within the Discovery Communications SG&A Accounting team. The Senior Accountant reports to the Senior Manager SG&A Accounting and will be involved in the monthly fixed asset and expense accounting processes, including order creation and running the monthly settlement and depreciation processes related to the Company’s PP&E, reviewing new purchases and lease agreements to determine if capitalization is appropriate, preparing and recording journal entries to the balance sheet and income statement, and preparing account reconciliations.
Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for month-end close, including complex and high volume general ledger journal entries and expense accruals.
2. Responsible for month-end fixed asset process, including order settlement, depreciation posting and review, capital expenditure accruals, asset disposal entries and variance analysis related to the PP&E accounts.
3. Assess preliminary cost center P&L’s to determine the need for accruals and reclasses based on forecast, budget and prior actuals.
4. Prepare appropriate documentation to support journal entries ensuring completeness and accuracy. Key journal entries include capital leases, DPG chargebacks, CoR/SGA alignment and accrual entries.
5. Prepare account reconciliations and perform analytical review of balance sheet accounts, and ensure timely investigation and resolution of reconciling balances.
6. Prepare a fixed asset roll forward on a quarterly basis to support the PP&E balances.
7. Prepare and distribute the Assets Under Construction (AUC) report on a quarterly basis.
8. Prepare analysis and supporting schedules to assist management in monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
9. Review shopping cart purchases and capitalized software requests and determine if it is appropriate to capitalize the assets. Quarterly, review and update the capitalized software tracking sheet.
10. Prepare the amortization schedules and capitalization entries related to equipment leases.
11. Assist with the implementation of the new accounting lease standard (ASC 842).
12. Prepare documentation and support for external/internal audits and SOX compliance processes.
13. Prepare accounting research and accounting memoranda as needed.
14. Provide customer support to corporate departments as needed on accounting/finance related matters and ensuring monthly expenses are accurate.
15. Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
* CPA preferred
* Three to five years of accounting experience with general ledger and monthly close processes, preferably in a fast paced environment
* Prior public accounting or audit experience is desirable, but not required
* Experience with enterprise information systems, SAP a strong plus and preferred.
* Strong oral and written communication skills, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
* Comfortable working with large data volumes with strict deadlines
* Strong MS Excel skills and proficiency with the use of accounting systems.
* Extremely detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
* Motivated by challenging, high-energy environment.
* A strong work ethic and ability to handle multiple tasks.
* Team player, able to be flexible and work well with others as a team player.
* Must have legal right to work in the United States.
