After spending our first year focused on San Francisco, Detour is expanding into New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
We are currently accepting proposals for an Executive Producer in each city. Note: EPs must be local or able to work local to their city.
We will produce 10 Detours for each city. Each Detour is an immersive, interactive 45 to 60 minute walk that reveals some key part of the city's soul. We refer to this collection of Detours as a Guide. The production process for the Guide will be roughly six months, led by an Executive Producer who oversees a small team of producers, with each producer creating 1 - 3 Detours.
As Executive Producer, you'll be responsible for programming, assembling a team, providing editorial feedback, managing the budget, and overseeing production. We expect this to be an eight month commitment-- six months full-time, with a 1 - 2 month part-time team recruiting process.
The EP will travel to San Francisco for a week-long training in Detour production tools and methods. The budget is roughly$150,000 for a 10-Detour city. Executive Producer compensation is separate from the budget.
We are especially interested in Executive Producers with episodic documentary experience and experience managing concurrent projects with multiple producers.
Responsibilities
- Curate the set of Detours for your city
- Recruit & train producers and other team members
- Help recruit narrators
- Oversee budget of roughly $150,000.
- Manage production timeline
- Provide editorial feedback and story guidance on all Detours
- Oversee testing of each Detour
- Recruit and oversee music director
- Oversee photography
- Pursue local marketing opportunities
Desired Experience
- Long-form (30+ min) audio or visual storytelling in television, radio, podcasts, film
- Experience shaping stories and giving editorial feedback
- Experience managing a multi-month production schedule with multiple projects in production at the same time.
- Experience managing a distributed team
- Experience managing a budget
- A deep understanding of the city
- An existing network of local producers
