Deluxe Digital Studios Montreal is a leading post-production provider of quality subtitling, closed captioning and translation services for major motion picture studios, film festivals, broadcast and cable networks. We have offices in 5 countries worldwide and our clients are some of the largest studios and production companies in Hollywood.
We currently have a great opportunity available for a Manager, Editorial (Subtitling). This position will be located in Montreal, Canada.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Manager of Editorial Production’s final responsibility is to supervise editorial staff and administer day-to-day editorial operations while setting the editorial standards and providing a proactive vision in line with client and business needs. The candidate is responsible for supervising departmental staff occupying a variety of management, scheduling, content editing and quality control roles, and for working in conjunction with local and international departments to ensure uniform quality subtitling content across all deliverable formats.
Subtitling and Captioning Production:
- Responsible for all aspects of Montreal Subtitling and Captioning English streams production:
o Assess and optimize the workflow for theatrical, home video and broadcast formats and recommend areas of improvement for integrating new technologies into the editorial process and reducing errors.
o Assess the current editorial pool and increase the quality of deliverables by adequate recruitment, induction and ongoing training.
o Establish, manage and optimize internal editorial production schedule.
o Ensure optimal project scheduling between in-house staff and off-site freelancers to ensure projects meet budget and quality targets.
o Assist the Senior Manager, WW Editorial in planning and aligning existing and new products/services.
- Work with the editorial board on improving policies and procedures concerning English file production:
o Manage and ensure timely execution of all editorial processes, standards, guidelines and clients/style guides within the editorial department in collaboration with international offices to ensure product consistency, establish quality benchmarks and produce optimal editorial content.
o Ensure all subtitling streams are delivered error-free and on schedule.
o Ensure client instructions, specifications and operating procedures are followed by the editorial staff and freelancers, with suitable quality assurance and disciplinary follow up initiated as needed.
- Identify, implement and monitor intra- and inter-office Quality Assurance initiatives:
o Collaborate closely with the Bangalore editorial team on enhancing procedures between both Montreal and Bangalore English departments, increasing communication and balancing available resources and work demands.
- Supervise the creation and updating of manuals, guidelines, work instructions and training materials for the department.
- Act as backup to Senior Manager, WW Editorial.
People Management:
- Supervise up to 25 editorial staff in house and up to 25 freelancers in North American and Australia.
- Ensure sufficient resource is available to achieve output, including recruitment, training and monitoring shifts and rotations.
- Conduct employee evaluations for department; meet and provide regular feedback to each team member and identify individual needs and goals for training and career development.
- Manage and develop direct reporting staff.
- Identify staffing needs, screen applicants’ resumes and conduct interviews for department.
- Participate in weekly meetings and attends regular international conference calls.
- Track and approve time off requests for department.
- Track and approve overtime hours for department.
- Actively participate in and promote company events, workshops, webinars and clinics.
Education, Experience and Competencies:
- Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Translation
- 3-5 years experience managing an editorial/translation department
- Background in the audiovisual or film postproduction industry an asset
- Strong client interfacing skills, including the ability to understand and interpret customer specifications and incorporate them into a standardized workflow for production.
- Ability to provide guidance and manage a large and diverse team.
- Should be a quick decision maker and have strong troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Flexibility to work extended hours and/or weekends to meet project deadlines.
- Proven English proofreading and writing skills (translation experience a plus)
- Well-versed in Associated Press style
- English mother tongue, fluency in French and other languages an asset
- Mastery of Microsoft Windows systems and Microsoft Office Suite
