CHIEF ENGINEER
(Oxnard/Ventura, California)
Scope
Directs and coordinates installation, maintenance and repair of studio, transmitting and ancillary equipment in order to maintain competitive signals in the market while complying with all FCC technical requirements. Includes responsibility for telecommunications, computer and networking systems.
General Responsibilities
• Maintains station operation through preventative and corrective maintenance
• Establishes and follows routine maintenance procedures and schedules for all broadcast equipment
• Performs necessary measurements of equipment performance
• Installs and performs maintenance on consoles, audio routers, recording equipment, microphones, digital audio systems, transmitters, antennas, control systems, remote equipment, etc.
• Provides maintenance and support of computer networks and related systems
• Physical plant HVAC level 1 troubleshooting and operational maintenance
• Works with promotions department to coordinate and maintain remote broadcasts as needed
• Develops and manages annual departmental budget
• Provide a quarterly technical failure report logging past 3 months problem resolution as well as regular status updates to management
• Administer safety plan and train employees to meet or exceed OSHA safety standards
• Acts as FCC Chief Operator of Record for all stations in cluster
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of all applicable FCC rules and regulations
• Computer literacy in applicable software packages (Microsoft OS and Office Suite, Adobe, etc.)
• Advanced experience with cluster-wide audio routing, digital audio delivery, EAS, Studio Telephone and Local/Wide Area Networking systems
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair broadcast equipment to the component level
• Ability to work independently to maintain, troubleshoot and repair non-directional AM transmitting facility and high-power FM transmitting facilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving ability and skill in prioritizing
• Knowledge of electrical systems and the NEC, UPS, and standby generators, record keeping and level 1 maintenance
• Troubleshoot HVAC systems and perform level 1 maintenance as needed
• Knowledge of telephone systems and protocols including POTS, ISDN, SIP, PRI, T1 and OC circuits
• Interact with management and staff at all levels and ability to multi-task and handle pressures and deadlines
• Drive 4x4 vehicles on unimproved mountain roads in all weather conditions
• Drive a vehicle with a trailer (up to 10,000 pounds)
• Certified and minimum of 5 years experience as Station Engineer or Chief Engineer
Education and Licensing Requirements
• Associates or technical degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcasting Technology or related field, or equivalent level of experience
• SBE Certification
• Must possess and provide proof of valid state driver's license and personal vehicle insurance
Physical Requirements
• May require lifting or moving up to 75 lbs
• May require climbing ladders and working on elevated surfaces (e.g. rooftops)
• Requires good manual dexterity for soldering, use of hand tools and working on small components
• Able to sit for extended periods of time
• Ability to be on 24 x 7 x 365 callout to respond to equipment failures at various locations
• Ability to withstand physical exertion at elevations up to 5,000' above sea level
