Purpose
As the Design Director, you will be working collaboratively with cross functional teams to drive and support the vision you help create through all stages of product design and development. You are a leader, and a doer. At once mentor/manager and hands-on contributor, you must have well balanced communication and negotiation skills and be masterful at motivating, managing, and mentoring seasoned teams of industry professionals. You push beyond comfort zones with creative thinking to come up with compelling designs exceed user expectations and solve business problems. You readily adapt to the changing landscape of todays technology; you're an adept problem solver eager to take on big challenges. And — you design beautiful things. This role reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer. This role is based in Corbis’ Los Angeles office and involves management of a design team distributed in various US locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
— Collaborate with cross-disciplinary leadership in product ideation and the visual articulation of ideas.
— Provide creative thought leadership and supporting design visualization around new features, products, and experiences within our brand landscape
— Partner with marketing design leadership to ensure that the product experiences that are developed within the technology design organization are in line with the larger Corbis brand and ethos.
— Ensure that technology design resources are appropriately staffed, managed, and organized to meet the evolving company priorities.
— Identify and procure top industry talent.
— Establish and maintain design processes and standards, working collaboratively across functions and business lines
— Work with Designers to develop design pillars, patterns, principles, guidelines, baselines, and boundaries
— Document product ideas from inception through implementation.
— Takes complete design responsibility and guides it through to completion - seeking out, evaluating and implementing feedback from all relevant sources to constantly improve and refine the title.
— Work effectively with the Chief Technology officer and product leadership to ensure successful product execution.
— Maintain a highly-positive proactive work ethic
— Ensure design deliverables meet quality and consistency standards across the team.
— Mentor, support and manage the careers of design staff and team members
— Curate/collect & share new media design developments and trends from across the web and wired world(s)
— Evangelizes best-practice design tools and production methodologies across the organization
— Design breathtakingly beautiful, deceptively simple, and exquisitely elegant experiences that help deliver the next generation of Corbis products
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
— Self-motivated and comfortable dealing with the ambiguity of V1, incubation and turn-around work
— Has an open-minded approach to design (methodologies, practices, philosophies and executions) and displays the ability to challenge convention while staying grounded in the practical realities of making products real people use.
— They will be forward thinking, have the clear understanding that research isn't a luxury it's a design tool, and recognize the difference between sketching an idea and drawing a conclusion.
— Passion for photography, iconoclasts, new media, rebuilding businesses, and creating stellar user experiences.
— 4 years in Design Director position, or equivalent experience with at least 3 major media brands preferred.
— Both Startup and Agency experience, with first version product, or similar demonstrated background working in a greenfield area a plus
— Thorough understanding of media/publishing image asset consumption, from design methodology to craftsmanship and production, digital, print and beyond
— Ability to understand technical problems and help identify solutions or alternate approaches, comfortable with new and unproven technology and knowledge of the latest technological trends (doesn't need to be an Engineer, by any means, but should be able to hold their won in a conceptual conversation with an engineer)
— A comprehensive understanding of Image Search, Designers, Art Directors, Editors, Publishers, and new media combined with an ability to identify, analyze and streamline experience design issues.
— An encyclopedic knowledge of fonts, and understanding of web font technologies
— Is a creative and resourceful problem solver that proactively communicates design goals and can operate and collaborate to the highest standard within the team structure.
— Proven track record of managing large teams to success
— Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, both verbal and written
— Broad knowledge of multi device design and development options (responsive, adaptive, app Vs. Mobile Web, etc…)
— Experience developing software and experiences in an agile development environment and can actively participate in sprint planning, product prioritizations and the creation of product roadmaps.
