We're looking for a Prop Designer to conceptualize and fabricate a bionic arm prop for the new Flying Lotus video in Los Angeles.
''Coronus'' is a surreal story following a man's journey through purgatory, led by a young boy with a bionic arm. We're looking to fabricate or appropriate an existing bionic forearm and hand for a 9-13 yo boy. We want to create something that feels new and innovative.
We're considering two approaches: 1) A super tight form-fitting sleeve that the actor wears that we might try to augment with a bit of post to create a see-through gap in his forearm. We want to avoid the look of a gauntlet or a comic book super arm. 2) The other approach is to build a full prosthetic independent of the actor's body. We'll shoot it as a plate and comp it into the shot's we'll need.
Aesthetically, here's the direction we're going for: Weathered and gritty, bio-mechanical, and more carbon fiber musculature than classic Terminator piston arm. We'd like this to be as much of a collaborative process as possible. The director, Young Replicant aka Alex Takacs, has a unique aesthetic and has worked with Lorde, the XX, Bonobo, and more.
We'd ideally like someone who is flexible, versed in CAD file design and has some experience with 3D printing. They will need to act as both prop designer and prop art director, responsible for budget, scheduling, and communication. This is a great opportunity with a sufficient rate for an up and coming designer to be part of an ambitious professional project.
Shoot: 28-29 October 2014
Pay: Depends on experience
