QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
• Degree in Music required
• Earned Masters degree in Music, Business Administration (MBA), or related discipline required
• Earned doctorate in Music, Business, or related discipline desired
• Evidence of degree(s) required at time of hire

Professional Experience:
• Substantial professional experience in at least one area of the music industry required
• Experience in record industry and direct-to-consumer marketing and promotions desired
Teaching Experience:
• Prior teaching experience at the college or university level (both undergraduate and graduate) desired
• Ability to teach mid-career adults in a cohort format desired
• Ability to teach in other musical disciplines desired

General:
• A full time commitment to teaching, mentoring, and advising
• Potential to become a national leader in the field of Music Industry Studies
• Professional music industry connections useful to the Music Industry Studies program
• Involvement in music industry related academic, professional, and/or trade organizations
• Demonstrate a commitment to working with a diverse student and faculty population
• At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching:
• Teach various undergraduate and graduate courses in Music Industry Studies that survey multiple industry sectors such as publishing; licensing; rights management; record production; record marketing, promotion and distribution; concert production; artist management; music in media; etc.
• Teaching may be assigned in a secondary area of expertise appropriate to the qualifications of the candidate, including courses in undergraduate General Education Curriculum such as popular music and/or film music
• The standard teaching load at CSU Northridge for a tenure-track position is comprised of a combination of teaching units and release time for research, administrative meetings, and university service.

Advising:
• Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
• Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods
• Provide academic advisement and assistance to students regarding instructional or program-specific issues

Administrative:
• Assist Music Industry Studies Option Coordinator in the general administration of area including curriculum development and course modifications
• Adjudicate audition/admission applications for the undergraduate-level Music Industry Studies Option and graduate-level Music Industry Administration degree programs
• CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.

Professional:
• Continue to develop and nurture professional music industry connections useful to the Music Industry Studies program
• Maintain involvement in music industry related academic, professional, and/or trade organizations

  GENERAL INFORMATION:

University: California State University, Northridge, one of the largest of the 23 campuses of The California State University system, is located twenty-five miles northwest of central Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb with a multi-ethnic population of over one million people. The University enrolls approximately 35,000 students (27,000 FTEs) from diverse ethnic backgrounds, served by 4,000 faculty. Nine Colleges offer baccalaureate degrees in 70 degree programs, master’s degrees in 58 graduate degree programs, 1 doctorate graduate program and 55 teaching credentials in the field of education, and various opportunities in extended learning and other special programs.

College: The Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication is inspired by the shared belief that art is communication, that communication is an art, and that art and communication are essential pillars for building and maintaining community. Comprised of six distinct departments (Art, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication Studies, Journalism, Music, and Theatre), the college is named after Curb Records Chairman and former California Lt. Gov. Mike Curb who in 2007 donated $10 million to the university to endow his alma mater's nationally renowned arts college and to provide a lead gift for the university's recently completed regional performing arts center.

Department: The Department of Music is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and features over 20 full-time faculty, over 50 part-time faculty, and over 500 music majors. Degree programs include: Bachelor of Arts in Breadth Studies, Music Industry Studies, Music Education, and Music Therapy; Bachelor of Music in Performance, Composition, Commercial and Media Writing, and Jazz Studies; Master of Music in Performance, Conducting, and Composition.

Program:
• The Bachelor of Arts in Music - Music Industry Studies Option prepares students to pursue executive and administrative careers in the Music Industry. Founded in 1994, this degree option offers a balance of the art of music and the discipline of business. All Music Industry Studies Option students are required to perform on a musical instrument or on voice and pass a performance audition. Once admitted the Option, students not only participate in traditional music courses such as applied music lessons and performing ensembles, they are also immersed in an interdisciplinary music industry and traditional business curriculum. This degree option culminates with an immersive music industry internship experience.

• The Master of Arts in Music Industry Administration degree is a professional program for students desiring an advanced degree in Music Industry Studies. An industry-focused alternative to an MBA for mid-career professionals who have a bachelor’s degree and are aiming for a successful, long-term career in such Music Industry, this program emphasizes analytical thinking, clear communication skills, the practice of ethical decision making and a global perspective. A spirit of collegiality among students, faculty, and members of the Hollywood/Los Angeles Music Industry community is fostered through social and professional interactions. This degree program was recently approved for launch in the Fall 2012 semester and will be offered through The Tseng College of Extended Learning.
