Purpose:
The VP, Business Affairs will represent the interests of CAPS and its clients by the enforcement of the collective bargaining agreements and shall be responsible for all contract-related matters related to broadcast jurisdiction including but not limited to serving as lead negotiator, managing grievances and arbitration and representing the company in matters before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
Responsibilities:
• Serve as a lead or support negotiations with unions in Southern California
• Work in conjunction with clients on all broadcast matters arising out of Southern California CBAs
• Responsible for coordinating with unions, with respect to all representational and associated legal work before the NLRB
• Collaborate in the handling of arbitration matters (both simple and complex), concerning grievances
• Provide consultation for personal service contracts
• Prepare legal opinions and documents that interpret applicable laws, ruling (arbitration and other), contracts, and various regulations related to applicable laws, in relation to News & Broadcast matters and as assigned
• Conduct legal and factual research
• Assist in the representation of state and federal court as well as administrative proceedings, regarding litigation brought by or against unions, with respect to contractual issues
• Perform other duties as assigned including providing CBA administrative support to other locals engaged in bargaining and other disputes
Requirements
• Working knowledge of labor law and employment law, including collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration and the NLRA
• Have an understanding and awareness of worker rights impacting union members
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Strong contract interpretation skills
• Able to successfully deal with challenging personalities
• Proficiency in PC applications and typing skills
• Detail oriented
• Excellent interpersonal skills - high degree of patience and tact. Ability to cultivate respectful, strategic, and collaborative relationships with people from diverse background both internally and externally
• Accountable for a high level of performance and integrity
• Capable of prioritizing and coordinating multiple tasks under daily, time-sensitive deadlines. Strong organization skills
• Able to work under pressure
• Capable of taking direction from more than one supervisor
• Must be able to work in a challenging environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged
• Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as
• Must be available and willing to work extended hours per day or per week, including weekends and holidays, as the business determines is necessary to meet its business needs
• Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the business deems necessary or desirable to meet its business needs
• A Juris Doctorate or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school or equivalent and at least five years' experience, with a minimum of 3-5 years' experience as a practicing labor law attorney, with proven experience in collective bargaining and contract enforcement
• Active membership in the State Bar of California
