Full Time Job
BuzzFeed News is seeking a full-time senior editor based in our New York City office to help work on some of our biggest stories, and to play a flexible role in our growing news organization.
We are looking for an editor with four or more years experience editing features, print or online, to work with a wide array of writers on a wide array of stories and shepherd them from a pitch and a first draft and line edits through fact-checking and publication, as well as collaborating with designers and developers. The ideal candidate is someone who loves hard news and can get up to speed on whatever subject any story might cover, or any set of unique circumstances that a complicated story might bring, and be as comfortable with the minutiae of a story's edit as its packaging and promotion. This role will sometimes involve handing relatively fast-moving news features and being on duty on weekends or evenings, and the ability to confidently jump from one situation to another, and juggle several projects at once, is essential.
The editor should be obsessed with how these stories live and share online, and someone who is constantly thinking about how to best present stories in a constantly changing landscape — someone who is comfortable with traditional process of developing and publishing feature stories but also intrigued by ways to reinvent and deviate from that.
We offer competitive compensation and a stock option program.
Responsibilities:
• Edit BuzzFeed reporters and freelancers, overseeing projects from inception through publication.
• Assist with managing the workflow of the many stories we have in development at any moment
• Generate ideas and find writers who may not be on our radar.
• Promote stories across social platforms.
• Contribute to the ongoing conversation about narrative journalism on the web in a meaningful way.
Requirements:
• At least four years experience editing features, either online or print.
• Comfort with hard news and intensive, document-heavy reporting.
• Ability to work independently and also as part of a larger team.
• Familiarity with conventional magazine-style editing and publishing, as well as a curiosity about finding new approaches and how stories work specifically for the web.
• Established social media presence, particularly on Twitter.
• Interest in writing features of one's own.
• Comfort with writers of all styles and dispositions and established relationships with writers that could be brought into the fold.
• The patience and the interest to work with a type of online journalism that's changed a lot in a short period of time and will continue to do so.
Interested candidates should include the following as part of their application:
• A detailed resume
• A cover letter that explains why you'd be right for the job and what more you'd like to see done with feature stories at BuzzFeed
• Your blog, Twitter account, Tumblr, and any other social media aspects to your life that you think we should see
