BuzzFeed News is seeking an experienced, focused, and ambitious editor to lead our national news desk in New York.
This editor must have experience working on hard news, enterprise stories and features that have both style and real-world impact. She or he must have strong ideas about what BuzzFeed News’s national coverage should look like — and how to break new ground on narratives around American culture, as well as gender and racial politics, how to get scoops of fact and scoops of perception. The National editor should be at home with running a desk that includes reporters working different tracks: some reporters working on definitive long-lead features and investigations; and others breaking news every day on fast-moving news developments while look for incisive enterprise stories. In addition, the features that this editor assigns won’t just be interesting — they’ll be powerful, troublemaking, and well-reported; exactly as short as they can possibly be; timely and accurate.
Candidates must also be interested in the ways that big stories can best reach a mass audience — on apps and social channels as well as via homepage feeds and videos.
The national editor will work closely with a team of reporters who work at different paces and on a variety of different topics including education, race, and crime and courts, and will be able to build out that team with a deputy editor. She or he will report to the Head of U.S. News.
Responsibilities:
• Partner with BuzzFeed News editors and managers to make coverage decisions in a fast-moving, ambitious newsroom.
• Edit a stream of powerful, step-back features on topics roughly similar to a newspaper's national desk.
• Oversee a deputy and team of reporters who work at varied paces, bringing them together regularly to make each others’ work better.
• Add style, velocity, and craft to the work of talented reporters with varying levels of experience.
Requirements:
• Proven editing chops.
• Willingness to work hard and stay late to make sure the story is perfect.
• Ability to take deep satisfaction in work under someone else’s byline.
• Emotional intelligence.
• Desire to work at a place that revels in both the serious and the fun.
