Reports to: General Manager
Broadway In Boston, Boston's leading theatrical presenter and producer of Broadway since 1984, is seeking a highly motivated, customer service oriented Theatre Manager for the Charles Playhouse. The Charles Playhouse consists of two theatres; the downstairs 200-seat theatre, home to the comedy whodunit Shear Madness and the 500-seat Main Stage Theatre, home to the long-running smash hit Blue Man Group.
Candidates for this position will have at least 3 years experience in professional venue management and must be extremely customer service oriented. The ideal candidate will also be proficient with Microsoft Excel and possess a strong understanding of budgets and forecasting. The Theatre Manager is responsible for the overall day-to-day operation of the building and is expected to be present at the theatre for a number of performances each week, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays. A 4-year degree in Arts Administration or Management is preferred but not required. Other job duties include:
- Oversee all public areas and operations of the Charles Playhouse in Boston.
- Schedule, supervise and direct a Front-of-House staff of 35 full- and part-time employees, including assistant house managers, box office personnel, ushers, security, phone operators, cleaning staff, and office assistants.
- Maintain a high standard of customer service, responding to customer correspondence and ensuring an outstanding patron experience.
- Oversee and direct the Facility Technician in all matters of building maintenance and safety protocol.
- Complete the weekly financial settlements with both Blue Man Group and Shear Madness.
- Work closely with the General Manager to complete the weekly box office revenue projections and profit-and-loss forecasting.
- Meet regularly with the General Manager to review the General & Administrative budget, regulate spending, and project capital expense projects.
- Be present at the theatre for performances of Blue Man Group in the Main Theatre and Shear Madness on Stage II
- Maintain, create, and direct all public safety programs ensuring the safety, comfort, and ultimate satisfaction of both Blue Man Group and Shear Madness audiences.
- Liaise with third party vendor which oversees all bar and concessions operations.
- Maintain the security of the building and the staff.
- Perform regularly scheduled inspections of the entire facility with the Facility Technician to ensure that all systems are operational and compliant with common maintenance standards.
- Liaise with production stage management to coordinate FOH operations, show policies, and the opening of the house for all performances.
- Communicate with neighbors regarding noise and traffic issues.
- Understand BFD Fire Safety regulations and maintain the Evacuation Plan, as well as hold annual evacuation and CPR training for all FOH staff.
- Maintain records of staff performance, time and attendance.
- Review and approve all invoices and submit to AP for processing.
- Review and sign box office statements.
- Create and distribute performance reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
