VP, Business & Legal Affairs
BBC Worldwide Productions has an immediate opening for a Vice President to join our Business & Legal Affairs department. The position will handle the development and production of scripted and unscripted television projects, as well as UK related contracts and development deals.
Primary Job Functions:
-Structure, negotiate and draft agreements relating to the development and production of scripted and unscripted television programs
-Be comfortable negotiating and drafting underlying rights, writer, and director agreements for scripted development
-Handle chain of title issues on projects and be familiar with the complexities of changed format productions
-Review network agreements for both scripted and unscripted projects as negotiated and assigned by department head
-Provide all necessary business and legal affairs services on scripted and unscripted programs once ordered to production - negotiate and paper above the line agreements, releases, product integration agreements, deal with insurance, clearance, music and compliance issues, and answer all general production related questions
-Ensure company policy is followed in transactions and on productions
-Advise on union and guild matters related to development and production
-Liaise with networks on program issues and contracts
-Familiarity with the production of programs overseas and the guild implications of same
-Handle business and legal interactions with BBCW companies as well as talent and talent representatives in other territories
-Manage relationships with agents and lawyers throughout entertainment industry
-Advise different business groups on a wide variety of legal matters
-Consult with and supervise external legal counsel on production related issues
-Perform other day-to-day business and legal affairs-related tasks as needed and assigned by the department head
Experience:
-JD degree and active member of CA bar
-Minimum of 8-10 years prior business and legal affairs transactional experience, ideally gained at a television production company, network, talent agency and/or entertainment law firm
-Extensive production counsel experience required, with both scripted and unscripted programming
-Understanding of industry standards for scripted writer, director, talent and underlying rights agreements, and extensive experience of negotiating and drafting same
-Familiarity with network commissioning agreements, changed format option purchase agreements, and network producer agreements
-Working familiarity with major above-the-line guild agreements and requirements
-Experience of overseas productions beneficial
-Deep knowledge of entertainment industry, entertainment transactions and strong relationships within the industry
-Outstanding analytic, negotiation and legal drafting skills
-Ability to identify and resolve legal issues quickly and communicate effectively to all levels of the organization
-Highly organized, detail oriented and self-motivated
-Ability to manage multiple matters and accommodate tight deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment; flexibility or long hours if and when necessary
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Positive and professional manner
-Ability to be discreet with confidential information
-Ability to work independently but also be a team player
-Must have the unrestricted right to work in the U.S. and be willing to submit to background checks
