Director, Business & Legal Affairs
BBC Worldwide Productions has an immediate opening for a Director to join our Business & Legal Affairs department. The majority of projects assigned initially will be scripted series and scripted development deals but the position will also handle unscripted television projects.
Primary Job Functions:
- Structure, negotiate and draft agreements relating to the development and production of scripted and unscripted television programs
- Focus will be on scripted programming development initially, working on underlying rights, writer, director and talent agreements.
- Candidate will also work on all aspects of unscripted development and production.
- Review network agreements as negotiated and assigned by department head
- Oversee all business and legal affairs aspects of scripted programs once ordered to production
- Advise on union and guild matters related to development and production
- Maintain template forms and implement BBCW policy
- Handle business and legal interactions with BBCW companies in other territories
- Act as a liaison between the company's creative executives and the creative community (i.e., talent agencies, talent managers, entertainment law firms, studios and production companies)
- Counsel the client groups on a wide variety of other legal matters, including guild/union and labor issues, intellectual property rights, insurance, product integrations, online and music issues, and performing other day-to-day business and legal affairs-related tasks as needed and assigned by the department head
Experience:
- JD degree and active member of CA bar
- Minimum of 7 years prior business or legal affairs transactional experience, ideally gained at a television production company, network, talent agency and/or entertainment law firm
- Extensive scripted television business & legal affairs experience required; familiarity with and understanding of industry standards for writer, director, talent and underlying rights agreements; experience acting as production counsel for scripted television programs
- Unscripted television production experience also beneficial
- Working familiarity with major above-the-line guild agreements and requirements
- Deep knowledge of entertainment industry, entertainment transactions and strong relationships within the industry
- Outstanding analytic, negotiation and legal drafting skills
- Ability to identify and resolve legal issues quickly and communicate effectively to all levels of the organization
- Highly organized, detail oriented and self-motivated
- Ability to manage multiple matters and accommodate tight deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment; flexibility or long hours if and when necessary
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Positive and professional manner
- Ability to be discreet with confidential information
- Ability to work independently but also be a team player
- Must have the unrestricted right to work in the U.S. and be willing to submit to background checks
