PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Screen Education Teaching Artist is a full time, short term role supporting the AFI Film Festival and is responsible for co-teaching a screenwriting workshop for high school students designed by the Screen Education Specialist and the AFI FEST Curriculum Specialist, Screen Education.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
• Collaborate with high school teachers to guide students through a four-session screenwriting workshop about the basics of story structure, which includes instructions on how to conceptualize story ideas and develop pitches.
• Collaborate with high school teachers to foster a supportive and inspiring environment in the classroom where students can explore personal stories, discuss works of art, collaborate and share their ideas.
• Collaborate with the AFI FEST Screen Education Specialist and the AFI FEST Curriculum Specialist, Screen Education to ensure curriculum guidelines and program timeline are met.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
• Screenwriting and/or creative writing background required.
• Experience teaching screenwriting preferred.
• Experience working in a school or workshop environment preferred.
• Experience teaching and building rapport with teens.
• Knowledge of and enthusiasm for how art and film can be used as tools to express the human condition.
• Ability to facilitate group discussions, assist students in making personal connections and identifying stories.
• Exceptionally detail-oriented with proven ability to handle numerous tasks with appropriate follow-up and reporting activities while not losing sight of the big picture.
• Ability to work independently while being an integral member of a high-functioning team.
• Proven project management skills with the ability to take a project from conception through completion with minimal supervision.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts and procedures in simplistic terms.
• Strong time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills coupled with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
• Strong diplomacy skills and professionalism are mandatory; this includes the ability to maintain complete confidentiality and discretion at all times.
• Excellent Internet research and computer skills with strong knowledge of Word, Excel and FileMaker Pro in a Mac environment.
• Possess a positive and professional attitude with the ability to work as a member of a high-energy, results oriented team.
• Ability to deal with rapidly shifting priorities in a fast-paced team environment.
• Ability to work calmly under pressure.
• Personal integrity and the ability to inspire confidence and trust.
• Foreign language a plus, especially Spanish.
