The Director, Thesis Production is responsible for overseeing and supervising all aspects of the Second Year Thesis Production to ensure that Thesis Projects are completed and comply with AFI policy and distribution requirements.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
• Collaborate with Vice Dean, Production and Post Production to prepare general Thesis production schedules in consultation with other key AFI Conservatory staff and faculty.
• Oversee completion of Thesis projects to ensure compliance with all AFI, local, state, federal and union/guild policies and procedures.
• Advise on the creation, revision and/or maintenance of policies and procedures that control and guide Second Year AFI Conservatory production.
• Oversee and prepare regular updates of key Second Year production paperwork in consultation with the Vice Dean, Production and Post Production including, but not limited to, the production handbook, safety manual, production documentation, and other forms and materials. The schedule for these updates includes many departments at AFI and attention and respect to the set schedule of updates is expected.
• Oversee and ensure appropriate, professional, Fellow-friendly communication through management systems and supervision, regarding issues, concerns and other matters, which involve Fellows and their production activities.
• Prepare and oversee key Thesis Production orientation and information presentations, materials and related activities for Fellows, faculty and staff as necessary.
• Participate in committee and other meetings relating to AFI Conservatory Thesis Production and provide advice and counsel on production related matters to key AFI Conservatory curriculum committees and groups.
• Oversee accurate and complete documentation of Thesis Productions, as required by AFI policies and procedures.
• Oversee the review, documentation and notification systems related to delivery of Thesis Productions.
• Advise the Dean, Executive Vice Dean and respective discipline head(s) of recommendations for classes or coursework that supports the training of Fellows in processes, procedures or logistics specific to their production work.
• Create and provide currency training in entertainment, regulatory and other practices to ensure that staff and thesis mentors are in compliance with up-to-date methods, rules and laws.
• Coordinate faculty mentors assigned to Thesis Productions.
• Serve as liaison with SAG and DGA on day-to-day Second Year production related issues.
• Oversee financial reports and related materials in the area of Second Year Thesis Production.
• Supervise Thesis Production staff.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
• Bachelor's degree required, Masters preferred.
• Minimum 10 years experience as a Producer or Line Producer in feature film and television production, to include both independent and studio productions.
• Minimum five years experience as a Production Manager in feature film and television production, with some studio production experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of physical production including scheduling, budgeting, management and production safety procedures in both union and non-union environments.
• Working knowledge of SAG and DGA agreements and contracts.
• Working knowledge of entertainment industry union agreements, policies and practices.
• Familiarity with non-union state and federal labor guidelines.
• Knowledge of entertainment industry practices regarding labor, insurance, payroll, Immigration, accounting, production business and legal affairs.
• Some teaching experience at college level or higher is preferred.
• Ability to prioritize workflow.
• Strong leadership, time management and multi-tasking skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts and procedures in simplistic terms.
• Strong diplomacy skills and professionalism are mandatory; this includes the ability to maintain complete confidentiality and discretion at all times.
• Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Final Draft, Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling.
• Can work independently while being an integral member of a high-functioning team.
• Proven project management skills with the ability to take a project from conception through completion with minimal supervision.
• Ability to integrate the values and culture of academe into the education of filmmakers and to support and enhance the ''learn by doing'' model that characterizes AFI Conservatory's mission.
• Possess a positive and professional attitude with the ability to work as a member of a high-energy, results oriented team.
