The Business Affairs team in the Los Angeles office is looking for a seasoned executive to negotiate and draft all agreements relating to the development, licensing and/or production of programming across multiple networks within the A + E Networks portfolio. Specifically this position will:
• Structure, negotiate and draft complex deals and agreements involving the development and production of programs (including made-for-television motion pictures, scripted series and some non-fiction programming), and other projects assigned by the head of the department as applicable.
• Act as a liaison between the company's creative executives and the creative community (i.e., talent agencies, talent managers, entertainment law firms, studios and production companies).
• Advise executives and client groups on strategic and complex business structures, risk matters, labor/guild issues and the use of the company's intellectual property.
• Review budgets, production materials and other information relating to the development, licensing and production of television programs.
• Performing other day-to-day business affairs-related and legal tasks as needed and assigned by the department head.
The qualified individual shall demonstrate:
• Extensive knowledge of entertainment law, entertainment transactions (in cable television) and strong relationships within the industry.
• An ability to defend, articulate and structure industry-specific definitions, e.g., backend definitions.
• The ability to reason, apply logic, make autonomous, common sense decisions and work with strict deadlines, heavy volume and all the while managing to make accurate legal assessments, be highly efficient and organized.
• In-depth knowledge concerning union and non-union labor and employment law issues, intellectual property law, risk management issues and rights of publicity and privacy.
• Impeccable skills as a draftsperson.
• A cooperative, team-oriented approach with an easygoing personality and the ability to interact with and persuade senior level staff and generate strong client satisfaction.
Required Experience:
10+ years experience as an attorney (including some significant law firm work) with several years in the medium of television, preferably with an emphasis on basic cable. Qualified candidates must be members of the California and/or New York Bar(s), should possess excellent drafting and organizational skills and be polished and poised in communicating and presenting with and to executives, internal clients and the outside entertainment community.
